Chapter Sixteen

August meant slightly shorter days, but not by much. Still, any extra moment with Shantay was a blessing to me. I took her out to dinner in the middle of the month and sat watching her enjoy her plate while I sipped my wine.

“Do you ever miss it?” she said.

I had no idea what she was talking about.

“Miss what?”

“All the women?”

I straightened in my seat and looked her dead in the eye.

“Nope. You’re woman enough for me, baby girl. Besides, we’ve been known to bring other women to bed with us.”

She shrugged.

“Sure we have. But you were quite the womanizer.”

“And how did that make you feel?” I said.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, assuming you had feelings for me back then, how did it make you feel to see me with a different woman almost every night?”

She carefully chewed her mouthful, took a sip of wine, and looked into the distance.

“I suppose I was jealous. But not necessarily of them.”

“How do you mean?”

“I mean, I don’t think I realized that I had feelings for you. I think I was just jealous that you were constantly getting some while I had settled into pretty much a celibate existence.”

I smiled at her. That had to have been so hard for her. I hadn’t ever considered her needs. She was always just my faithful driver at my beck and call. I didn’t think she’d ever had a night off while in my employ.

“I’ve not treated you very well, have I?” I said.

“You treat me wonderfully.”

“Sure, now that you’re my partner. But not while you were my driver.”

“I’m still your driver, aren’t I? And is that what else I am? I’ve moved up from girlfriend?”

“Yes, my dear. I consider you my partner. I want to spend as much time with you as I can. And maybe I shouldn’t continue to employ you. Maybe I should give you enough to retire. Would you stay with me?”

“Of course. I’m not going anywhere. And you can pay me or not. I can’t remember the last time I’ve spent a dime of my own.”

“Okay. That settles it. You’re fired.”

“Thank you.”

“But seriously, you’ll need your own spending money. I don’t want you to be totally reliant on me.”

“I have plenty of money. You’ve always paid me well, and I’ve never had time to spend any of it. So I have a nice nest egg.”

“Great. That makes me happy.”

She finished her dinner and we walked through the neighborhood. The old houses were beautifully kept up, and I loved each one of them. Shantay stopped in front of one and took a picture. The house was old and dark with lots of plants in the front yard.

“What’s so special about this house?” I asked.

“It was the inspiration for a bunch of books.”

“Yeah? What were the books about?”

“Vampires,” she said.

“Vampires? You’ve read books about vampires?”

“I have. Though I didn’t believe in them.”

“Ah. So I wasn’t your first?” I laughed.

“You’re my first and my last.”

“Good answer.”

We strolled farther and finally ended up at home.
